DNG files (which BTW, are about 1/3 smaller in file size without any loss of quality) and threw away original. I'm so confident that I will never use Capture again, that I converted all 120,000 images in my files to.

As far as LR not remembering camera settings, its not a problem as you can create camera defaults based on your preferences Plus with Capture, you'll have to manage all of your images manually.

nef files and will remember camera settings but is offset by being the worst software I have ever used in terms of a pleasant user experience. Sure Capture renders beautiful results from. Lightroom is a solid value and is always being updated to support newer cameras. Lightroom is a pleasant experience to use, powerful, and can be used to create web galleries and slideshows. Not only in terms of keeping your images organized, but also for processing your images. I have used both and without hesitation I recommend Lightroom. I should also mention that Lightroom is cheaper for me as I can get a discount as a teacher. As I see it NX2 would help me to learn about the picture controls in the camera (so about making better jpegs) but Lightroom would help with organising photos (not entirly clear how but I am clear that I need help) and would perhaps output files that I can use directly with CS3.

I have wondered about buying Capture NX2 (or waiting for NX3?) or buying Lightroom. I have to convert my NEF files to DNG format as CS3 doesn't support D3100 - this is a bit of a pain mainly because of the multiplication of files on my PC. In the last couple of weeks I have got access to CS3 and so started shooting RAW and trying some PP.Īt the moment, nearly all of what I'm doing is in Camera Raw. I bought a D3100 a few months ago and have been really enjoying playing around and learning from my many mistakes, shooting jpegs. It all boils down to what you are most comfortable with.

I am sure you will hear why NX is more popular but here is the thing: download both free trials and compare. Additionally, LR is made by Adobe and is upgraded more regularly. But that advantage is offset by usability (LR is far easier to use) and output. NX does bring your camera settings over and that is an advantage. With Lightroom, I rarely go to CS anymore (or any other software). Not only is it wonderful for organizing photos but it produces better out put than the Nikon software.
